Marylou welcomed April into her home, giving her a quiet, comfortable place where she could finally rest and prepare for motherhood. It was clear she was ready to have her kittens, but no one could have predicted how difficult her labor would become.

For more than 12 hours, April struggled with labor. When it became clear something wasn’t right, Marylou rushed her to Metropolitan Animal Hospital in Highland Heights, Ohio. The veterinary team quickly determined that April needed an emergency cesarean section to save both her life and the lives of her kittens. The surgery was successful. Mama April had given birth to 6 healthy kittens. Just three days later, on April 5, Marylou noticed April rapidly declining. She became lethargic, refused food and water, her body temperature fluctuated dramatically, and she wasn’t producing enough milk to care for her babies. Without hesitation, Marylou rushed her back to the emergency clinic. Despite EVERY EFFORT to save her, April unfortunately lost her battle after developing sepsis. How can a mother who had fought so hard to bring her babies safely into the world was now suddenly gone, despite all efforts? Rescue has taught us that hope and heartbreak often exist side by side. Just as hope can fill a room, grief can flood it without warning.

At just days old, April’s babies now faced life without the one thing they needed most; their mother.

On April 6, the very next day, Marylou made an outreach post on Facebook asking if anyone could help foster 6 orphaned, newborn kittens for around-the-clock care.

That post found me.

I don’t know how and I don’t know why, but something told me that I needed to help these babies. How can someone who has no experience with orphaned, neonatal kittens possibly raise April’s 6 babies? Saying yes meant bottle feedings every few hours, around the clock, sleepless nights, constant monitoring, and learning something new almost every day.

Neonatal, orphaned kittens are incredibly fragile. Routine was CRUCIAL to their survival—every feeding, every ounce gained, and every tiny milestone mattered.

There were moments of exhaustion and moments of uncertainty. But, there were also moments that I’ll never forget.

Fostering April’s babies changed me in ways I never expected.

Watching tiny eyes begin to open. Hearing the first playful squeaks. Seeing kittens who once fit in the palm of my hand begin exploring the world around them. Every small victory felt like a miracle because I knew how close they had come to never having that chance.

While fostering was demanding, time-consuming, and emotionally challenging, it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It reinforced values that extend far beyond animal rescue—empathy, service, advocacy, and meeting needs wherever they exist.

Through this expereince, I was reminded that compassion often looks like showing up during someone else’s hardest moment – even when that someone has four tiny paws. Rescue isn’t only about saving lives; it’s about giving hope where there was once uncertainty. I came to understand that every rescued kitten represents something much larger. Their stories reflect the realities of neglect, overpopulation, limited resources, and the incredible impact that compassionate people can have when they choose to help. Animal welfare and community welfare are deeply connected, and creating a more compassionate community means caring for every life that depends on us.
